Review:
Book description: This volume covers the development of bank supervisory standards for an emerging Chinese Economic Circle (CEC) in which the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, and Hong Kong form an informal, interdependent relationship through their significant, increasing, inter-investment and inter-trade activities. The PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are liberalising the regulation of their respective banking industries and are developing Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong into major financial centres. To do this successfully requires the integration of prudential supervision (based on banking standards from the UK, United States, EU, and Basle Committee) into Chinese Banking Law and Practice. Bankers, banking lawyers, investors, and compliance officials will appreciate the way Development of Banking Law in the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan expertly brings together, in a single volume, the supervisory standards of PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and offers unique, thoughtful solutions.

Review:
Book Description: Winner of the 1980 United Daily Literature Competition, this novel about love, betrayal, family life, and the power of tradition in small-town Taiwan was an instant bestseller when first published in Taiwan. At once a bittersweet romance and a vividly detailed portrait of life in a southern Taiwanese coastal town in the 1970s, A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers captures the intimacy of agricultural life in the midst of an increasingly industrialized society. At the heart of the story is Zhenguan, a sensitive young woman whose coming of age is influenced by new experiences in the city, the wisdom of her elders, and her strong, unique identity. In Zhenguan´s journey of first love, suffering, disillusionment, and - ultimately - zenlike triumph, Hsiao Li-hung celebrates the values and traditions that have sustained and nurtured life in Taiwan through the centuries. Hsiao traces the relationship of Zhenguan and her childhood friend Daxin against the background of daily existence and festival celebrations in their extended family. Daxin, in many ways Zhenguan´s male counterpart, is fascinated by ancestral worship during Lunar New Year, riddle-solving during the Lantern Festival, and the noontime water and sticky rice dumplings of the Dragonboat Festival. These rituals, part of a rich cultural heritage, add charm to their romance while shedding light on the reasons for their eventual separation. Hsiao uses simple lessons taught in the garden and prayers uttered in a mountaintop temple to enrich and temper the story with the spirit of Buddhist teachings. The novel masterfully interweaves Buddhist maxims, poetry, folk songs, and puns with the dialogue, capturing the integral nature of tradition in the characters´ lives as they search for meaning and solace in life´s unpredictable fortunes. With understated elegance, Hsiao Li-hung´s lyrical work affirms a way of life both fleeting and enduring. For readers interested in Chinese literature and culture, and anyone who enjoys a rich family saga, this is a unique and beautifully told story.

Review:
(Reviewer: A reader from Cambridge, MA, January 28, 2000). Politics in Taiwan' is an extraordinarily well researched, elegantly argued and very readable book. It concisely contends that Taiwan's 'democratic miracle' is a result of a long history of local elections that have taken place on the island, inculcating democratic skills and nurturing a viable opposition to the authoritarian regime. The book comprises an equal blend of theoretical reasoning and empirical richness. Professor Rigger nicely captures both the dynamics of historical development and the contingencies of real-life politics. A must-read for those interested in contemporary Taiwan and/or democratization, and very suitable for the college classroom.

Hardcover (September 1999)
Review:
Book Description: As Taiwan has changed from a traditional peasant society into a very modern one, the political and educational institutions have had to adapt. With economic affluence, the people demand democracy and openness. The younger generation, too, has new expectations that contrast sharply with older ways. This book tells how the China Youth Corps (CYC) is adapting to these dramatic changes in Taiwan in order to serve the developmental needs of young people. First established to ensure patriotism, party loyalty, and political control of youth, this voluntary organization now de-emphasizes politics while providing educational and cultural activities that are recreational and still morally uplifting.
