SoundLuv@aol.com (Jen) from Syracuse, NY , September 2, 1998

A must read! This book should be a Bible for families adopting hurt children. Keck takes the adoption process step by step and uses case studies to back up each piece of information. We see that there are reasons behind each phase the child goes through, the honeymoon period, the fall-out that follows, the need to drive away their parents before the parents drive them away. Through the children's actual words, we feel their pain. Methods are suggested for dealing with attachment problems, sleep disorders, axieties, etc. Though this book focuses mainly on domestic special needs adoptions, foreign adoptions are warranted their own chapter and, besides, many of the issues are the same.

A reader from Loveland, CO , July 16, 1998

A must-read for anyone considering older child adoption. I devoured this book in 2 days - we are considering older child adoption, and this was a good introduction. It is a bit outdated, which is rather distracting at times, but it mentions a great variety of behavioral problems and some solutions. Written as four gripping stories, the technical information is easy to understand. Number One Information Source on Adopting an Older Child If you are considering an adoption, but a new baby may not be the choice for you or your spouse, Read this book. Claudia will take you through the process of a state adoption of an older child. Four case studies of very different types of adoptions are present in the book. I learned so much and now I am more eager than before to start on my journey to be a parent. This book highlights the different problems that may arise from the adoption of an older child especially of one that has been in the state foster care system. A definite recommend anyone interested in adoption or even childhood behavior problems.

A very important and helpful book, highly recommended. This book is wonderfully and sensitively written. The reader is encouraged toward meaningful reflection on the child's experience of growing up in an interracial family. Practical advice, soul-searching questions and obvious pleasure in parenting characterize the issues and stories in this book. You owe it to your child and yourself to read this book. Very helpful for adoption professionals as well.

A reader from Freehold, NJ , March 9, 1998

Thoughtful view of total international adoption experience. I read this book at the beginning of our journey into International adoption. The book starts with the motivation for international adoption and moves through the stages until Ms. Register concludes with grownup adoptees and their view of the world and themselves. She includes both experiences of over 30 parents and adoptees themselves. She asks thoughtful questions such as "How do you feel about mixed race marriages?" Ms. Register causes one to reflect on issues that may occur in the future. That's what I liked about her writing. I highly recommend this book to everyone considering adopting from another country.

Adopting After Infertility by Patricia Irwin Johnston

Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours.

List Price: $14.00, Our price: $11.20, You save: $2.80 (20%)

Paperback (November 1996)

Printed reviews of this book include the following...From Adopted Child (July, 1993)

"While there are many books that explain the adoption process, none of them explore with much depth the issues that aodptiove parents must deal with before making choices about what type of child and what type of adoption to pursue. Adopting after Inferitlity fills that gap remarkably well. It provides the kind of information that should be found in every ore-adoption class... Johnston, who is well known in the infertility and adoption communties for her work in those fields, is the natural choice for a book of this type. Her chatty style makes for easy reading, so there is no excuse for every parent considering adoption not to read this important book. From Serono Symposia's Insights into Infertility Newsletter (Winter, 1992), and reprinted in The New Social Worker (fall, 1994)..."People making the decsion to build a family through adoption after infertility must revise and reintegrate the ideas about parenthood that have been forming since childhood. Johnston recongizes this better than most. Acknowledging that some things in life remain ambivalent and ambiguous, she never attempts to make something understandable or tolerable by resorting to reductionist thinking. By refusing to trivialize a complex life experience,Ms. Johnston demonstrates the sophistication of her thinking and the genuine regard she has for her audience... This book is must reading, not only for people considering adoption, but also for those who seek to help them." from Pact Press (Winter 1994)...This clear, simple guide acknowledges that adoption may not be the right answer for everyone. This book is not only thorough, it is flled with the forthright opinions of the author. .. Though this book explores the losses associated with infertility in a clear way, the writer does not let her readers wallow. She offers the Chinese concept of crisis, consisting of danger and opprtunity as a better model. People stuck in victim behavior willlearn how loss obstructs decision-making, and, more importantly, how to move forward...It is essential reading if you are considering adoption after facing the challenges of infertility... lively and easy to understand."

Adopt International : Everything You Need to Know to Adopt a Child from Abroad by O. Robin Sweet, Patty Bryan (Contributor)

Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours.

Paperback - 365 pages (May 1996), List Price: $16.00, Our price: $12.80, You save: $3.20 (20%)

From Booklist:

Americans complete more than 10,000 international adoptions annually. This book is a godsend for those contemplating the process. The authors stress, however, that the task is not for the faint-hearted or those who only wish to "rescue" a child from his or her past; prospective adoptive parents must instead be prepared to give the child a future. The book thoroughly covers all legal, social, cultural, personal, and bureaucratic procedures involved, from selecting a placement agency to enrolling the new family member in an American school. Sweet and her husband have experienced the international adoption process, and she and Patty Bryan have produced a detailed, realistic guide highlighted by first-person accounts and numerous appendixes of adoption agencies, support groups, newsletters, and other resources. This could easily become the bible of a burgeoning adoption phenomenon. Patricia Hassler

Reviewer: Deborah B. Pettry from California.

I found "Adopting in China" to be a wonderful book on two levels. The first level was practical: the specific costs, logistics and preparation for adopting a Chinese child. (Don't miss the resource list at the back.) The second, and more important, level was personal: an open and honest story of the internal journey a man goes through as he moves from "going along with" his wife's adoption wishes to discovering a new world of love with the child. Although the first author listed is Kathleen Wheeler Werner, 95% of the book was written by Doug Werner. This is a male story, told by a man with his thoughts and feelings. We see the adoption process, the child and even China through his "Everyman" eyes. As a woman and as a professional accustomed to traveling internationally, I didn't always agree with him or feel comfortable with what he was expressing -- and that's what made this book so powerful. It forced me to think. Every husband who is still feeling ambivalent about adopting from abroad and every wife with such a husband should read and discuss this book.
