STACEY’S OWN BONE GRAFT STORY*

"On the second of December, 1998 I went to hospital to have a bone graft. The hospital I went to was the Mater Children’s Hospital.

I wasn’t feeling scared in the morning, but at about 2 o’clock (operation at 2.30pm) I was really scared.

I couldn’t eat a thing all day (after 8.30am). I got really hungry. Especially after Mum & Dad ate lunch in front of me.

In my bag I had:

  • A book from my birthday
  • More books
  • My stuffed lion
  • Two cabbage patch kids

Just before my operation I was really scared. In the waiting room Mum and Dad were there. When I went into theatre Dr Bishop gave me gas. When I was asleep he gave me the needle.

After my operation my mouth hurt really badly and so did my hip. I was really sleepy. Everytime I woke up I would throw up.

But then the nurse gave me painkiller and medicine to stop me throwing up, through my drip. The nurse kept coming to give me my medicine. I had a good night’s sleep from then on. The next day I was a lot cheerier and less sore. In the morning I watched "Simba’s Pride" and I used a bedpan to go to the toilet because I couldn’t get out of bed.

Nonna and Nonno came to see me. They gave me a book called "Shocking Science - 5000 years of Mishaps and Misunderstandings". That day I could actually eat something! All it was was jelly ice-cream and watermelon. It tasted really good.

I also read some of "Animorphs - The Encounter" that afternoon. A bit later we went home. I got down to the car with the help of Pedro the wheelchair man. In the car I just sat there the whole time. Even with my cheek all puffy and a splint in my mouth it was great to be home.

  • A note from Mum:

Well….that was Stacey’s view of how everything happened!! Some things she doesn’t seem to even recall (like she slept most of the way home in the car, & that she had said it was okay for John & I to share half a sandwich!!!), so we just won’t worry about them!!
